Church’s Japan Earthquake, Tsunami Relief Effort Bolstered in Sendai and Watari

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to help rebuild areas of Japan affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck on 11 March.

Bishop H. David Burton shakes hands with a fisherman in Watari, Japan. Bishop Burton said the Church will provide the Watari Fishers Union with an ice maker, a refrigerator, a cooler truck and other equipment and supplies.

Most recently, Presiding Bishop H. David Burton visited Watari, Japan, with a humanitarian donation to the Watari Fishers Union of the Miyagi Prefecture. The tsunami flooded the first and second floors of the union offices, wiped out their compound, severely damaged most of their boats and carried away many of their nets and other equipment out to sea. Bishop Burton said the Church will provide the union with an ice maker, a refrigerator, a cooler truck and other equipment and supplies.

Also, Church missionaries recently returned to Sendai to help rebuild the community. The missionaries cleared debris, removed sludge (a thick, stinky, contaminated mud) from victims' homes and yards, and performed other service.

KSL-TV and the Deseret News recently reported on these events, and you can find their respective stories below:
