The Kyiv Ukraine Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) has received first place for the best religious building constructed in Ukraine in 2010.
The award was given by the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine on 12 September 2011. (Read more in a Ukrainian government news release. Text is in Ukrainian.)
Latter-day Saint temples are known for their inspiring architecture, quality of construction, meticulously maintained grounds and the peace and serenity they evoke. The Church currently has 136 temples in operation across the globe.
The Kyiv Ukraine Temple was dedicated in August 2010 by Church President Thomas S. Monson and is the Church's first temple in the former Soviet Union.
Latter-day Saint temples are different from the meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord” where Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve their fellow man.
