    MSNBC Recounts Mormon Missionary’s Survival of Japan Quake

    A second story in as many days, filed by senior reporter Kari Huus, appeared on MSNBC.com featuring a full-time Mormon missionary serving near Sendai, Japan. He was one of many caught in the devastating 11 March earthquake and tsunami.

    Huus writes a compelling report of Pocatello, Idaho, native Patrick Hiltbrand’s firsthand account of the minutes following the powerful temblor and subsequent tsunami and how he was a calming influence to those around him during the frightening ordeal.

    Elder Hiltbrand had served15 months of a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan when the quake happened.

    Huus also gives a good perspective of why young Mormon men and women serve missions. The story also includes an interview with Elder Hiltbrand’s mother that provides a further perspective of the young missionary’s character.
