SALT LAKE CITY —; Flood-stricken cities in three European nations will benefit from cash donations from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Church is working with local governments and relief groups to purchase $635,000 worth of food, pumps, cleaning supplies and drying equipment.
"These supplies will augment the enormous contribution of labor from our members and missionaries in Europe," says Garry Flake, director of the Church's Humanitarian Emergency Response. "Under the direction of the Church's Europe Central Area presidency, we have been talking with the mayors' offices of these 11 cities to determine where they need help the most and what we should supply."
In Austria the Church will provide flood relief funds to the cities of Steyr, Krems, Salzburg and Linz. Prague, Czech Republic, will also receive Church aid, as well as Dresden, Magdeburg, Dessau, Eilenburg, Regensburg and Passau in Germany.
The Church has an established tradition of humanitarian service throughout Europe. It sponsored 203 projects among 18 European nations during 2001.
