When the Relief Society, the women’s organization for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was first organized in 1842, the Prophet Joseph Smith charged the women of the church to “provide relief of the poor, the destitute, the widow and the orphan for all benevolent purposes” and to “save souls.
