Mormon women in Singapore have come together to knit 1,700 beanies that will help save the lives of vulnerable premature babies.
After hearing of the need many hospitals in parts of Asia had for the beanies, Sandy Simiskey, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized a group of women — all part of the Relief Society, the Church’s women’s organization — to begin knitting the hats. Since the project started, over 100 women from the community have joined the effort.
The hats have been sent to hospitals throughout Asia. Two hundred beanies were recently sent to Hong Kong and will be distributed to maternity wards there.
A doctor at the Fabiella Hospital in Metro Manila, Philippines, said: “We are just trying to find a way to get hats for our preemies. There is such a great need. We suggested to the mothers that they cut off the toes of their husbands’ socks, but not many people here wear socks. Thank you so much for the beautiful hats.”
Simiskey said about the project: “Making these small hats is our way of sending love out to all of the tiny babies being born today. I hope that these hats will help to keep them warm and to thrive.”
