Relief Society and YWCA Leaders Meet

SALT LAKE CITY — Leaders of the Relief Society and the World YWCA — the two largest women’s organizations in the world — met yesterday to discuss various issues facing women.

Kathleen Hughes, the first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, met with Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro, general secretary of the World YWCA.

The two organizations are "able to reach out to people regardless of the borders," said Dr. Kanyoro. "It does not matter; it is the humanity that pulls us together."

Sister Hughes commented that in both groups, "work is done with the spirit of love and concern for our fellow man."

Dr. Kanyoro was also able to see firsthand how the Church handles issues of self-reliance and humanitarian aid by visiting Welfare Square and the Humanitarian Center.

The Relief Society has nearly five million members worldwide. The YWCA is in 122 countries with 25 million members.
